Creation Celebration This Sunday! April 27 3-6pm

Earth_b_1_2 Today is Earth day and next Sunday our church will be doing it's part to help all of us take care of our planet- God's creation.  So there won't be "normal" evening youth activities this weekend.  But from 3-6pm we'll have a rock climbing wall and all sorts of booths set up where you can talk with experts, receive information, and get some hands on experience in living green.  Of course they'll be food and our spring choir concert is at 6pm.  See you there!

Youth Room Couches

Couch To the delight of some and the dismay of others, we are not taking any of the youth room couches to the new building.  So, this leaves us with two options:

1.  Give the couches to someone who wants them.  There are a couple that would be decent, but many of the couches really wouldn't be fit for human use.

2.  Destroy them.  If you're interested in this option, contact Adam or leave a comment.
It's going down on Friday.

Parents, don't worry it will be supervised and safe, there will not be any fire involved!.  But those couches have gots to go!

Youth Mission Work

Souperbowl On Feb. 3rd our church will be participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring.

Click here to check it out.

So everyone bring money or canned goods and support the cause.  This means not just youth, but everyone!

We'll be sending our proceeds and any canned goods to the St. Louis Foodbank but we are also going to donate to KIVA.org helping to relieve poverty in AIDS stricken Africa.  Jesus calls us not only to love those around us, but those around the world.

Speaking of which, we've adopted two children from World Vision as part of our youth ministry.  Each week we'll be collecting money to help our friends Alan and Jean!  So don't forget to bring a little bit every Sunday- go ahead and sacrifice getting that latte and help out a bit!

Sorry everything seems to revolve around giving money, we know thats not all it takes.

On February 16 our youth group will be making fleece blankets to help those who need warmth in our area.  It starts at 10am in the Kitchen and should be over by Noon.  Stop by, make a blanket, and warm somebody up!

February 3rd, Schedule Change High School Super Bowl Party

Hey guys, don't forget in two weeks we go to a slightly different schedule:

4-5pm Middle School Youth (nothing different)

5-5:15pm Dinner (shortened 15 minutes)

5:15-6:15pm High School Youth

The reason we do this is because usually everyone is standing around for the last part of dinner and we've got to keep you in the kitchen!  So this way you can get home faster, and finish the homework you've put off all weekend.

Also, for high schoolers we're going to be having our 4th Annual (maybe ever longer) SUPER BOWL PARTY.  It's goin down at the Wert's house. It starts at 5:15 and ends when the game ends. BRING SOMETHING TO EAT! PREFERABLY SOME SORT OF DIP!  Here's a map, click on it and you can enter your address to get directions.

Christmas Party this Saturday!

Ornament This Saturday at church is our annual Christmas Party. We're "adopting a family" to shop for, which we've done in the past. But this year the family is coming to us!

We've showing some love to Nichole, a single mother with 6 kids:  Jackie (14), Jasmine (12), Jade (10), George (7), Robert (6), and Noah (1).

Here's the schedule:
10am- Meet at church, go down to the valley to shop from the list Nichole gave us
11:30am- come back to church to wrap presents and eat (lunch provided)
1pm- Nichole and the kids get to church! We're going to show her kids some love and give her a break! Here's some of the stuff planned:
-Wii (of course)
-gingerbread houses, only with graham crackers and frosting
-baking christmas cookes
-decorating a tree
-making ornaments
-watching home alone
-having the kids open up a couple presents under the tree we decorate

So this is a chance to not only buy some presents for a family but to really get to know them and share our joy with them. Please bring $10 (or more) to help with buying gifts. You can also bring a Wal-Mart or Target gift card for Nichole.  If you have any questions please let me (Adam) know. Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday! This is for Middle School and High School students.  If you'd like to know more, you can download the letter below that was in our newsletter.

New Youth Room

Youthroomhalloween_001Last Friday our High School Youth Planning team was able to take a peek at the new church, and our new youth room in particular!  It was very exciting!

Youthroomhalloween_007We're looking at one huuuuuuuuuge space, with unfinished ceilings

Youthroomhalloween_010 and a great view of the outside with lots of windows.

Youthroomhalloween_011We look forward to lots of exciting things happening within these walls.

We hope God will use this building as a tool for his kindgom.  It's easy to get caught up in all the cool stuff we could fill it with.  We need to remember that the church is made of the people, and that our building is going to be nice, but it's not the point, loving Jesus is!Check out the photo album on the right for a couple more pictures.

Seagal_blog275x281 The gentlemen will be participating in the 2nd Annual MANLYMPICS.  What is the ManLympics you say?  It is a multi faceted competition to see who in fact, is the manliest of them all.  I mean, just look at the picture:  What could be more manly than Steven Seagal, playing a guitar, in a shiny gold kimono?  That pretty much sums up the ManLympics right there.

Response to Tragedy

Vt_ribbon_gray
For anyone interested in downloading Pastor John's message from Sunday, you can download it here.

We've got some new additions to the "reccommended reading and listening" sections on the right, and some new videos should be on their way as soon as Google video starts working again!

I hope everyone is enjoying the last few weeks of school (and by enjoying I mean surviving!) and that as we finish Prom season everyone can remain safe.

Also, our prayers go with everyone in the Virginia Tech community. Go to New Life Christian Fellowship's website on the campus of Virginia Tech to see how the Church is responding locally. Also, check out this page to hear a song in response to the tragedy.

Worship 4.22.07

Staff_drage This Sunday April 22 we'll be having a time of Worship in the sanctuary from 6-7:30pm.  Living water will be leading us in music and we have a very special guest.  John Drage will be talking to us about the importance of community and not getting complacent in our lives.  John is a close personal friend of Adam's and Pastor at The Rock, a church on the campus of Mizzou.  Check out their website at columbiarock.com More about John:

John Drage has been the pastor at The Rock since it began in January 2001. He is passionate about competing, eating and talking. Some of his favorite movies are “Braveheart,” “The Emperors Club,” and “The Patriot.” Originally from Cleveland, he graduated with a degree in math education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. John married Amy in 1989, and they have four children: Josh, Jessie, Caleb and Nathanael.

We're inviting anyone from the congregation who would like to join us for worship, and hear John a wonderful and innovative pastor.  See you Sunday!

Babysitting List

Adventures_in_babysitting Hey guys.  We have lots of parents of kids at church.  We have lots of youth at church.  Sometimes, these parents need someone to watch their kids.  If you're cool to pick up some babysitting gigs and know not to stick your finger in an electrical socket leave a comment or email amustoe@ellisvilleumc.org

The hope is to have a list of people from our church that parents can call when they need a sitter, sometimes at the last minute.  So when we get a call here I don't just scratch my head and rattle of the names of the people that have given me bribe money.  Babysitting list....sign it!

This week

Eggs2Hey guys,

This week is Holy Week, where we hold services to remember Jesus the life of Jesus during last days.  Holy week starts with Jesus' entry into Jeruselem (Palm Sunday), remember the last supper (Maunday Thursday), we mourn the death of Jesus through the crucifixion (Good Friday), and celebrate resurrection (Easter Sunday).  If you'd like to learn the history of these days you can check that out here.

Our Maunday Thursday service will be at 7pm on....you guessed it....Thursday!

Good Friday service is also at 7pm on Friday.  It will be much like a funeral, where we mourn the bodily death of Jesus Christ.

It's makes a huge difference to understand the meaning and historical tradition of Holy Week.  I would contest that Easter should be the weekend of the Jewish passover for historical accuracy, but what do I know.  Our silly lunar calander makes the date change according to old tradition.  So, check out the link, get educated, and we'll see you this week.  Blessings to all God's people this Easter, and everyday.

-Adam.

Bonus points if anyone can leave a comment on how easter eggs and the easter bunny came to be cultural symbols this time of year .

Updates

Hey guys!  The trip to Mexico was a success and we hope everyone had (or will have) a great spring break wherever you are.

This Sunday is Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week.  Pastor Michael will be giving his vision for the future of our church, and the palm branches are always fun to hit your little brother with.  To see the biblical story from which we derive Palm Sunday check out Matthew 21: 1-11

April 1st we'll have Sunday School and Youth Group as normal, also there is a Spring Choir Concert at 7pm in the sanctuary that you're invited to.

April 8th we will have Sunday School as normal, but no confirmation class and no youth group.

Viva Mexico!

Mexican_flag
18 high school youth and 7 adults left for the 5th Youth Mexico Mission Trip, we're working with Proyecto Abrigo from March 17-24.

Hey guys. I'm sitting at the compound we're staying at in Juarez, Mexico. We don't have heat in the dorm rooms, but we've got wireless internet!

The trip down was great. A little cramped in the bus, but you really can't complain as it was nicely air conditioned, well equiped with a DVD player/plenty of screens, and great company. Plus, no one threw up or anything.

So on your right hopefully you'll see that we have some photos posted of the trip so far- not too many exciting ones yet but it's been nice to get some down time after traveling. Tommarow we'll start putting the work in workcamp.

Keep checking back as we're hoping to have some blog entries (travel journals) from the kids at least a couple times this week, if not daily.

Much love,

-Adam.

Book Club Changes

Books Anyone who's come to book club has heard me harp about the adamsbookclub blog.  Well, guess what?  I killed it.  Now we'll do all the online interactions of book club through this here site.  Also, the "Adam's" in "Adam's Book Club" is dead too.  It really never was, but definately is no longer, my book club.  So "Adam's Book Club" is now simply, Book Club which you can find under the "categories" section anytime.

Here's what I gathered from the previous online and in-person discussions:

  • Meeting after spring break, probably at Kate's house
  • Probably reading "Dinner With a Perfect Stranger" (which you can find linked on the right, along with the other books we've read).
  • Still want to meet during the summer, but need some of ya'll to step up, son!

So, you can comment on here instead of "adamsbookclub.blogspot.com" and I look forward to what you guys come up with.  Book Club is open to any 9-12 grade student, we meet Tuesdsay's from 8-9pm, with location and book after spring break almost determined.   As always, post a comment and let me know what you think!

High School Youth

High school students grades 9-12 are important to us at EUMC. Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:30 a disciple bible study class is held at Crestview Middle School (right next door). Disciple Bible Study is a curriculum desinged by the United Methodist Church, a class you can sign up for again starting in August. Also from 9:30-10:30 we hold Sunday School down in room 105, with biblical and topical issues being discussed.

Sunday evenings we have youth group which meets at EUMC from 6:00-7:30. We goof off together, worship together, learn together, and just plain enjoy being together. We would love to welcome you and any friends, any Sunday.

There are also lots of opportunities for high schoolers who are interested in the arts. Check out the EUMC Celebration Arts page for more info.
